Angki Purbandono

Angki Purbandono is an artist known for his innovative methods of using photography in art. He studied at Modern School of Design (MSD), Yogyakarta and the Indonesian Institute of the Arts, Yogyakarta. Angki is also one of the founders of ‘Ruang MES 56’, a media art collective.

Angki later established PAPs (Prison Art Programs) in Yogyakarta, and is also one of the mentors in the government program ‘Learning with Maestro’. Angki has participated in many exhibitions and projects such as The Asian Artist Fellowship, Changdong Art Studio, South Korea (2005-2006), ‘LIVE and LET LIVE: Creators of Tomorrow’, 4th Fukuoka Asian Triennale (2009), Jakarta Biennale 2009’s ‘ARENA’ (2009). His solo exhibitions include ‘2 Folders’ at Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Japan (2010), and ‘Grey Area’ at Bangkok University Gallery, Thailand (2017), among others.

For the 2019 Jogja Art Biennale, Angki discussed his experiences as an artist, especially those he documented in his diaries whilst being imprisoned for 10 months. By inviting the public to discuss and dig through the thoughts and experiences that shaped his work, he taps into his securities and vulnerability.
